December 1, 2012

We are rapidly approaching the end of 2012 and 2013 will be here before we know it.  In the meantime, there is lots of learning and fun coming up in the next three weeks!  Be sure to check the school calendar, the PTA newsletter, Scoops, and your child’s classroom blog to stay current on what’s going on.

Two things I specifically want to mention are Math Night and our Watch D.O.G.S program.  Math Night is a fun event for students and families that focuses on math games and real life math applications.  Math Night this year will be held on Wednesday, December 12 at 5:45 – 7:00.  There will be food, prizes and lots of fun activities, so please plan to join us.  If you haven’t already sent in your RSVP, please do so as soon as possible so we can be expecting you.

Our parent involvement program for dads and other father figures, Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is in full swing now. Since the program began in late October, we have had a dad volunteer almost every day.  Students are so proud when they see their dad, uncle or grandpa helping out in classrooms, keeping everyone safe in the hallways or doing lunch and playground duty.  Our dads also have their pictures taken with their child, so check out our “Heroes of the Hallway” bulletin board just outside the Media Center.  We encourage every one of our dads or other father figures to sign up to be a Watch D.O.G. for a day this school year.  Just call the office to sign up!

The last day of school is Friday, December 21.  It is a full day of school.  If I don’t get the opportunity to speak with you between now and then, please know that I wish you and your entire family a wonderful holiday and Happy New Year!

District Announces 2nd Annual Response to Bullying Kick-Off Event

The Dearborn Public Schools is excited to announce that they will be starting a “Chain Reaction” against bullying behavior at their second annual Response to Bullying Kick Off event! All are welcome to attend this free event being held on Monday, October 1, 2012, starting at 6:00 pm. at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn.

“Our community knows that bullying behavior can happen anywhere or anytime; in the classroom, at the park, in the mall, or on-line. This is the reason our Board of Education took on this project and why we have had such great support from our Mayor, City Council, community groups and organizations,” commented Dearborn Superintendent Mr. Brian Whiston.

Last year’s kick-off was a huge success with more than 700 community members in attendance. This year’s celebration should prove to be even more entertaining as students from around the district will have their talents on display. Student-made videos, songs, dance numbers, and other talents, all revolving around the theme of bullying, its effect on the victim, and how to be an Up-Stander, will be included in this sixty minute variety show kick-off event. Inspirational words from Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly and Dearborn Schools Superintendent Brian Whiston will highlight the program.

New district policy on bullying behavior includes language that requires all Dearborn staff having any contact with students to participate in annual anti-bullying professional development on how to prevent, identify, respond to and report bullying behavior. In addition, each school will hold annual anti-bullying training for parents, track incidents of bullying, and hold three anti-bullying events each year.
